Lee,
Check the nameplate on your motor and then go to the following page on the MarineEngine.com site:

Evinrude

This web site, OldMarineEngine.com is for pre-1940 style inboard engines.

That is a 2HP Rope start Evinrude 1985, the "CO" is 1985 model year. If you need a manual for it I suggest the Seloc Manual. The factory service manual for 1985 covers all the models that year, and would be overkill if all you need is info on a 2HP motor.

Chip,

Your model number is 4266. The serial number is 11061.

That is a 1.1HP Evinrude from 1938-41.

We can supply some manuals for at the MarineEngine.com site, and you might be interested in Peter Hunn's OLD OUTBOARD BOOK

That is a 1980. The "CS" in the model number is "1980 model year".

The "M" is "manual tilt - electric start"

The "L" is 20" shaft length.

Joey,

Model number E35RCSM is a 35HP Evinrude Rope Start, 1980 model year.

I don't know about adding electric start or "rideguide steering". I suggest that you post those questions in the outboard category of the discussion board at MarineEngine.com, it is a companion site of this one but is focused on more "current" engines.

The OldMarineEngine.com site is focused on "early style" marine inboard engines.

senor dave,

Your question above...

I think you have the model number wrong. That is a 100HP commerial model, but the last two digits probably aren't "14". If it is 100WTPLG it would be 1993.

Are you sure about that model number "75920"...? Could it be "25920"? If so it would be 25HP, 1955.

This site is really for old "inboards", not "outboards". You could try the board at our other site, MarineEngine.com for other outboard questions and manuals for outboard motors.

L = Long Shaft
CI = 1981
C = Model run during that year, not critical.

I have a 1969 Evinrude 4hp lightwin. It is in good shape except for a stripped oil filler screw in the lower unit. Will the lower unit from a 1972 4hp Evinrude be interchangable? I can pick up a 1972 4hp for little cost that has a good lower unit. Thanks.

Gforce421:
Are you sure about the numbers you posted? The "30475" is close but not quite right. You can see what the pre-1980 evinrude numbers for a 40HP should be at this link.

*********

dhwright:
You might be better off asking that question in the Johnson/Evinrude cateogry of the board at MarineEngine.com.

This site, OldMarineEngine.com, is focused on old "inboards", not outboards. I'm sure that anyone here that could help you would be happy to, but outboards are not the field of expertise for most of the regulars here.

The board on MarineEngine.com is a similar format to this one, so you should have no trouble posting. But you should post your question as a "new discussion" instead of adding it onto an existing thread of messages as you did here. You will see a "start new discussion" link in the blue bar at the top and bottom of the categories.

Gary,

The model number should be on a nameplate on the mounting bracket, or stamped into a freeze plug or the flywheel. See possible numbers here.

Brew,
You will need the to find the model number on the motor also.
This site is really for old "inboard" engines, you can get more info on outboards on the discussion board at marineengine.com.

I have what appears to be a 4 hp evinrude long-shaft, model: E4BRHLCOB, serial #: B100356.

Can someone tell me what year it is? I am trying to sell it. It's my dad's and he doesn't remember much about it. Also does anyone know the price range? Thanks.

Chulo,
That doesn't look like a Johnson / Evinrude number... what kind of motor is it?

Catherine,
That is a 1985 model year motor.

You can check the price guide on MarineEngine.com at this link.

You can post it for sale in the classifieds

Chulo,

You need the model number (the number you supplied is not the model number), which should be found on a nameplate on the mounting bracket. Once you have found it see this link:

model number code 1980 and up

That is a 1985. The "CO" in the model number is "1985 model year".

See this link

For parts, see this link

PS: This website is really for old "inboards"... not outboards. For outboard questions try the board at MarineEngine.com

Hi. I have 2 Evinrude engines one is a 4Hp and the other is a 6Hp. Both are twin cylinders. The 4Hp has no tag on the transom mount. How would I obtain the model and serial number? the 6Hp has the model and serial as follows: Model 69866e (the third digit could be a B instead of an 8) Serial B037953. please can you tell me the year of the 6Hp so that I can hopefully get a manual to cover both of them. Thanks very much.

Are you sure about the model number 69866E ? That doesn't match up (nor if it was B instead of 8). See this link.

Some of the older Evinrudes have the model number stamped into a freeze plug or into the flywheel.

I'm sure that it is correct as I made a special note to be accurate but I was running late for work so I will recheck. I thought it strange as I looked at all the links to engine codes and they did'nt make sense to me either. I may have missed some letters if they were standard for the tag and not stamped into it like the rest. I will return tomorrow after i recheck. Thanks for responding.

Kevin: 10524C is a 9.9HP from 1975

Frank: Those numbers aren't going to help. You could try posting a picture of it on the board at MarineEngine.com.

Richard: That serial number doesn't look right. It should be similar (or at least the beginning of it) to the ones here.

Darrell: That is a 25HP 1976.

Steve: Is that a 5HP ? If so it's a 1935.
If it is 4HP then it's 1971.

See parts and manuals here.

It's a 1964 9.5 hp short shaft.
If you try to turn the flywheel with your hand on the outer diameter it should be hard to turn through top dead center. Both cylinders should feel the same.
Just about all parts are still available through your local Evinrude or Johnson Dealer. I just reconditioned 3 of them and had no trouble getting parts from my local dealer.
If you are anywhere near Southeastern Mass I may be able to help you.
Hope this helps
Ernie

thats a 1952 3hp model. That model was the first of the 3hp's and later on became the 4hp. That design has been used by Evinrude/Johnson ever since with very few internal changes. One of if not "the" best small motors ever produced, by any manufacturer.

RWHIT46684,

It is probably MQ-14E not MO-14E. That would be 9.5HP from 1968. See this link for manuals.

Jeepnut666,

E25RCOS is a 1985 25HP Rope Start. You can look at the parts diagrams from the link here.

tfran605:
6504R is a 6HP 1975.

Brian:
I don't think JBF4P is a valid model number.

Mike:
4351 is a 1.8HP from 1940-41. You could post it for sale in our classifieds.

Kevin:
Manuals for that 1941 3.3HP are available.

Jeff:
1509490 is a 150HP 1979.

Heath,
The "G" is probably just the run within that model year. Not relevant for anything now.

David,
Model E60TTLESM is a 1990. See this link.

Hi. We just bought a 1970 boat with an Evinrude 25 hp motor. The serial or model number is 25102S or 251025, there is another number: E06126. We don't know if the motor is the first one for that boat or many of several, but one site I looked at indicated the motor to be a 1971. Can you verify this so we can find the right parts list? Thanks so much.

Bill,

The serial number won't identify it.

The model number should be on the same nameplate where you found the serial number. You haven't said "approximately" what year it is, but see pre-1980 model numbers here.

I have a 100 Horsepower outboard Evinrude electric start/trim. There are no nameplates or identifying placards. I have found various numbers stamped on different parts of the engine/mounting bracket/shaft but found no relevance to serial number. Was told it is a mid-90's model but want to verify for maintenance manual purposes. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!

I have a 48hp evinrude, model E48ESLEDS. I was told to use "INTRODUCES" as the code representing nos. 1234567890. The ED would make it a 1996, is this correct? Also, what ratio of oil to gas?
Thanks, Doug T.

I am considering purchasing a 1993 Evenrude 70hp that is in excellent condition along with a Striper 18' 1993 boat, trailer, etc. The owner says the motor runs out to 5500 rpm and gives the boat about 25mph top speed. Does anyone know if a slightly larger or pitched prop - dropping the rpm to say 5000rpm would increase the speed of the boat? Thanks, Bob

With that combination of HP, boat length, and top speed, you're doing about right - best way to increase speed is make the boat lighter. A change of 100lbs can make a big difference. The placement of weight in the boat also affects top speed. The flatter the angle to the water, the less wetted area and the faster it will go.
But I doubt that you'll see anything major - not more than 3%-5% improvement - plus you'll be guzzling fuel at top speed

Is the 70hp Evenrude enough motor for the 18' Striper boat? I don't mind 25mph as we're not interested in going faster unless we can do so with the existing engine. Also would a larger engine with higher top end be more costly gas wise than the 70hp if we got it up on plane and cruised at 20mph? Just checking before I buy. Thanks, Bob

E10RCID is a 1981 rope start.

This board is for antique style inboard engines.

You should ask questions about that Evinrude outboard on the

MarineEngine.com board in the Johnson/Evinrude category.

Thanks.

That is a 1985. The "CO" in the model year is 1985.

You can get parts and manuals for that motor from the MarineEngine.com website.

To remove the shift rod you need to remove the powerhead (engine) from the lower unit. The top of the shift rod is threaded and has a nut on it where it attaches to the shift lever.

Your best bet is to go to the Antique Outboard Club
www.aomci.org
You can advertise it there or use the ask a member option. There is an FAQ section as well
Hope this helps

The numbers would be on the nameplate. I thought you said the nameplate is gone.

The number might also be stamped into a freeze plug or the flywheel, but with that vintage it might not be anywhere but the nameplate.

You can see the possible model numbers from the guide here.

Kirk90: 25526 is a 1956, 30HP. See this link for manuals.

riggerrick: I don't think that "R" has any significance. Usually that last letter was to designate the model "run" within the model.

Ibbbaa: 4201 is 0.9HP 1937. See this link

This engine is differant than the other "69's"40 Hp. engines that I have. I was wondering if it meant "research".... The Water pickup tubes, and exhaust stack are differant..It also came with a brass speed prop...

I have an older 40 hp Evinrude Norseman motor. It doesn't have a plate on it that anyone can find to detect what year it is. We have found these numbers: 330737 KD2 and 387442 D2
which I'm sure are just part numbers found on the mounting transom bracket. I have been told that it most likely is a 70's model, but need exact numbers to know for sure and get parts and a manual for this. Any help would be great!

I have inherited my wifes grandfathers 1970 15 ft Alum. Starcraft with 33 HP Evinrude "Twin Ski" what would the gas to oil ratio? I'm told by my brother in law this boat should go about 28 mph, but it doesn't come close. Probably closer to 12 mph. it's been garaged for 19 years, it starts fine and sounds good, just fish no speed. Any ideas? I know that gramps had it set up for fishing only, I have pitched the motor using the "bar" on the transom, and that helped, I removed the "fish on troller" and that helped a little I think. That's the end of my boat knowledge.

I am preparing to sell an Evinrude Sportwin Model 4423, serial number 22004 and need to know what year and what HP it is. The original owner penciled on the parts list that came with the motor when I bought is says it is 1946. An online site claims it is made between 1947-1951 and is a 3.3 HP. Is this information right? Sweet Outboard

Cody,
I think you might have a letter wrong in that model number. Could it be E25RCTE ? that would be a 1983. See this page.

****************

Kevinwitherspoon,
That is a 1956, 7.5 HP model 7520.
We have the drawings posted here 7520 and we have manuals here 7520

It runs great and I need to sell it to help pay for my son to get in school this year. It's on a Bayliner. The boat is junk, but the motor and trailor are good. Any advice or info? Any help much appreciated! Thank You!

I'm guessing here because none of the charts matched mine exactly, but is it a Johnson 150, trim and tilt, 20" shaft made in 1986 in Canada? Also, it's white. Sorry if this is the wrong place to post.I have pics...

Please verify your model number
E=Evinrude
6=6 HP
R=rope Start with tiller steering
E=9 first digit of model year
M ?
M ?
With this info It most likely is a 90 something
You can get manuals and parts at www.marineengine.com which is the host site for Old Marine Engine dot com
Hope this helps

Model 60173S -- The ID tag says it's a 50hp but the model# indicates it's a 60hp. Which is the right answer and I guess the "S" is for the run?

Thank you in advance

I have a 200hp year 2000. model E200FPXSSC. I know the FP means its a FICHT power trim/tilt, but this motor has carbs with the carb bowls. Some model codes have FP meaning its a commercial engine, what does that mean. It does not have the components to make it a FICHT. Any other way I can find out what motor I exactly have

Marc, Try posting at marineengine.com or call American Outboard in Maryland. Your Evinrude is about fifty to a hundred years newer than this forums primary subject matter.

I bought this motor from a guy near Lake Fork for $25. After getting home realized there is no serial number plate. I need to replace the impeller and need the year it was made. Freeze plug has the following on it: 18602C on top and E08984 on bottom. Can't find any other numbers on motor anywhere. Any help is appreciated and thanks in advance. Glenn

The only words I could make out on the tank are " sport wi--" it is a twin cylinder and it has champion spark plug # 0com in it?

We beleive it to be a 1939. Do you have an educated guess on what we can sell this for.
Motor looks to be complete and in good shape

Mark Meissgeier:
Model E10RCSE is 1980. See here for all drawings and available parts. See here for manuals.

nhrafastford:
4266 is a 1.1HP from 1938.
You could post photos of both on the MarineEngine.com board and I'm sure someone could help.

ktownhero:
Sometimes the model number is stamped into the freeze plug but J3584037 does seem to be a valid number. You could post photos of the engine on the MarineEngine.com board. Thanks.

Just bought an old Jon boat with a 40hp evinrude on it but can't seem to figure out the year. The model number is E40TEESR, it's a jet drive motor and it says Evinrude VRO on the case. Any help? I've tried the decoder above, SR at the end means 04, but I've seen people take from the 2nd and 3rd from the last meaning it would be ES 1990..

Anyone,

I have an Elto circa 1940. Tag number is 4351-02819. Please help confirm exact model name, date of manufacture, horsepower and any specifications related to point gap, max rpm, oil/gas mixture to use, etc. Runs good---anyone ever sold one? What general value could it have? Might sell, if there is any interest.
Thanks for your help.

It appears that there were 2 versions of long shaft. Factory and dealer
See attached pics found somewhere on the net. Thanks to whomever took them.
Note the distance from the lower motor mount to the cavitation plate. When your motor is on the boat the cavitation plate should be slightly below the bottom of the transom. If you have a short transom and a long motor the cavitation plate will be aproximatly 5 inches below the bottom of the transom
Short Shaft
35 Short Shaft
Dealer installed long shaft
35 dealer long shaft
Factory long shaft
35 factory long shaft

Bought a 1981 Aquasport Center Console. Was told the outboard is an Evinrude 225 hp. There is no serial number, etc...to determine the year. The owner said it was anywhere from a 1984-1987. I traced the numbers on the heads which these heads were used on 1988, 1990, 1991, and 1992 models. Can anyone assist me in trying to pinpoint the exact year of this motor?

hi there, seems to be a common thread but... I have just been gifted a Evinrude sportwin 9.5 for my dads old boat, just popped the flywheel off and the points/magnets and condensers look gone, there is only a limited jolt from the leads (when a screwdiver is held in the plug lead cap with your hand it is just a tickle) tried new plugs but no spark.... I need to replace the electrics but,, wait for it! i dont know what year it is, or where best to buy parts. Engine number is co557217. any help would be appreciated. oh! and I live on the isle of skye, Scotland, so it will have to be uk internet parts, i would think?

Try cleaning the points with fine sandpaper, if there's corrosion on the edges of the contacts be sure to buff this off as it will soon migrate back across the contacts. Clean with contact cleaner and try for spark. The OMC points, condensers, and coils were standard for many years.

JB many thanks for that.. I did clean the points with fine paper which produced the weak spark. I will still need the coils I am sure as they look blown/swollen i will try and order a generic one if you think that they are the same throughout the years. many thanks for the help

Hello,
I bought an Evinrude Big Twin without noticing the name plate was absent. The seller told me it is a 40 hp but I have nothing to corroborate it and would also like to know the year model.

Many thanks for directions

I have an outboard, SE 25 RPF, serial no. G03922647, USA. Only one id plate on shaft.
Could you tell me the year. R, rope start, PF no idea.
Should it have a second id plate and what would be on it. What is the best fuel/oil mix.
It can start in gear, ouch, should this happen or is there something broken.
Thank you.

Are you sure about the serial number? My list shows the A model starting in 1915 with serial number #A3000 to #3999
Is your motor a single or twin?
does it have a skeg on the very bottom of the lower unit?
did you miss a digit?

I have an Evinrude Javelin 30 that I cannot find any number plate on. It is a dark red/maroon,burgundy color. Could someone tell me where exactly the number plate should be? It's not on the middle section of the motor where the online dating guide I used told me it should be. Also, can someone give me a range of possible years based on the color, 30hp size, and Javelin name? I have attached some photos in case they can help. Any assistance would be much appreciated.

I hadn't noticed these before but starting with the June question from 2016:

Jerry rubin: 1964 Evinrude 18402 18hp. See link for parts drawings and available parts.

Shawn Shulenburg: You can see the drawings for all the 1975 models here. You might need to look a the different horsepowers to figure out what you have.

Willam Johnson: 4B36D isn't a valid model number. Could it be 4836E ? That would be a 1978 4HP.

Thomas Nesbitt: As Ernie mentioned that is a 7.5HP from 1958. We don't have the Evinrude drawings posted but we do have the Johnson drawings for the same year. They will be the same for most parts. Generally the difference would be motor cover, decals, emblems, etc. 1958 7.5HP.

These drawings are all on the our affiliated web site,
MarineEngine.com

Thanks.
Andrew
