Just purchased a 74 30' Islander MKII, it has a 26 hp Palmer motor (red in colour) launched the boat with the previous owner. Started no problem but failed to spit water out exhaust. Smoke came from exhaust port but not water. Temperature was monitored and never over heated. Moved boat to dock (short distance), still not water from exhaust. Entered cabin and noted alot of warm water in bilge under floor boards, bilge pump pumped out water. Ran motor at dock, bilge pump while in auto kicked in immediately. Examined motor from cockpit storage locker, no excess water noted from propeller shaft. Stairwell cover removed and no water noted their either. I think.....the lake water is being sucked into the motor but is somehow leaking before entering the exhaust piping. Does anyone have any ideas??

Sounds like a leak in the exhaust line. Water must be going into exhaust line at engine end but settling in the lower portion of the line. Better find it fast as an overheated exhaust line can cause fire. My guess but better find it fast!!!

Thanks for suggestion, that's what we figured too but what about the idea of a frost plug/s going?? This would cause the large amount of water coming from the motor and not exiting the exhaust port out the back. Thanks again, Irwin

PS. The engine is a Palmer 29, 27 hp, 4 cyl,. again it's in a 74 30' Islander MKII. Does anyone happen to know where the frost plugs are located? And how many? Hope this gets resolved soon. Season's coming to an end up in Canada. Thanks, Irwin

Hi Irwin,
Freeze plug is on port side of engine.

I purchased our Islander 30 MKII new in 1972. Was shipped in winter time to Wisconsin. When it arrived I noticed the freeze plug on floor below engine. Reinserted it with wood dowel and hammer. That is 38 years ago...still runs OK.

Irwin if your engine has any freeze plugs if they were missing or loose you would have a stream of water obviously spewing out the the water jacketed parts of the engine. If the engnine is not getting hot but the jacket water is appearing in the bilge then look along every inch of the exhaust pipe. If the water was going into the crankcase you would soon have water coming out the dipstick vent. The oil would look like yellow gunk

Everybody, Thanks for the questions answered and help. We figured out what the problem was.....(drum roll please.) Two frost plugs under the exhaust manifold had popped out. They were in good condition and were tapped back into place. The motor was started and the exhaust water was pumped out the back of the boat. They haven't given us any problems since. Again, thanks for all the help, great site. Irwin from Saskatchewan.
