Check for a brass wire sticking up on the aft Port side of the crankcase of the top half supporting the cylinders. It should have a cork float about 3" dia. by 1/2" thick. should move up and down freely in brass oval top guide. Trans mission is not connected to reverse gear in most models. You can take off the crankcase cover on either side of the cylinder portion and look for oil level which the cranks cause the rods to dip in the crankcase oil about 3/4".
Use typical #30 car motor oil in engine crankcase and reverse gear crankcase.
Engine normally is timed to run counter clockwise.
