I am restoring a Universal Super Four Marine engine. The crankcase has a large oil capacity and an oil cooler but no filter. The oil pump outlet comes outside the crankcase to the oil cooler and then re-enters the crankcase to supply oil via several lines to the internals. My question - has anyone added an external filter to one of these engines, or a similar engine. I'm thinking a high capacity full-flow filter with hi-pressure bypass built-in. The oil pressure spec is 45 PSI so i'm thinking I will measure the pressure without the filter installed and then raise the oil pressure (via the pressure adjusting screw) until the output pressure at the filter equals my unfiltered pressure. Since the lines outside the engine are standard 1/4" copper tubing, it would be very easy to 'cut in' a filter.

Commments, thoughts??????????????

Thanks in advance!
Jon

Jon,

I just helped someone do this on a Ford Interceptor 292 engine. It was complicated because he originally had a canister type filter mounted on the block and we used adapters to go to a remote spin on filter.

Fram sells a number of remote filter assemblies and kits which they consider "high performance" parts. You could probably use a HPK2, see below:

HPK2

It seems that piping to the filter assembly would be easy because you are already piped out of the engine.

Fram also has dual filters and a variety of other configurations...

Regards,
Andrew

Andrew,
Thanks for the suggestion. I thought of talking to parts jobbers but I forgot about the OEM manufacturers of filters.

Andrew, This has nothing to do with the subject. Need to alert you to the fact my e-mail server is down for at least this week and I cannot receive or send e-mail. Don't know what their problem is.
