Each time I have refurbished my SXT I have used either Wattl Killrust or White Knight RustGuard for the painted surfaces. It looks great for a while, but in about 6-12 months it starts to discolour, blister or flake off. They are both supposed to be self priming rust inhibitve paints. What do others use?

Bruce, how far do you want to go for a long lasting finish?
We usually pull the whole motor down.
Soak it in terco to strip the old paint off,
after really cleaning all grease and oil off
Then we descale all rust off, then soak in a 50/50
Mixture of molases and water for 2 weeks.
Then rinse off with fresh water, dry, and then
wire buff all parts to a bright finish.
Depending how badly rusted the motor was,you may have to repeat this process
I use Forminex 2pk red oxide primer(2>3 coats)
then Forminex 2pk Super gloss (3coats)
Post box red for blaxlands
Brunswick green for simplexes(personal choice,as
I think the pale Hammer tone green looks bad)
PQR make a good enamel single pk that you can
brush or spray.
For the bronze, brass bits Wattyl do a spray pack
called "Lacqer finish" especialy for copper, brass'and similar alloys.(Its in a predomanantely blue can with a photo of a small
brass door bell on it) I get it from bunnings
But I hear rumours that it will be soon discontinued, its good stuff so if you find it
Stock up

Thanks Todd. I did most of it right although I didn't use the molasses treatment. Where do you by the Forminex paint from? I also use the Wattl Clear Laquer, and I agree, it's great stuff. I'll have to stock up if its on its way out.

The company "Forminex" is based in South Australia
They have an agent in Sydney in Balmain(Presidents
Shipwrights Marina,34a St georges cres, cant remember
phone right now ,Frankie is the person to speak to.)
Sounds tacky but I have the area from Hawkesbury river Nth. I must qualify that I have no hidden agenda to sell or Market product . I only mention
products that work well, given the confines of cost ,ease of application, and longevity of product life.
I have tested many products in the time we have
restored boats and vessels at Green Point,From
Bertrams to Ex Naval work boats,Putters(my favorites),Everinghams etc.
I only mention what works well(for us)
Attention to DETAIL is the true answer.
