Hello
I need some advice pictures of a closed cooling system for a Blaxland twin.
This seem like a good idea but I don't know how to set it up or if it would be worthwhile.
Any help appreciated

Nick

Nick, From my experience Blaxlands are extremely durable in saltwater conditions even if they are left for months without freshwater flushing. I've been doing that with my motor for over 20 years and it looks like it will see me out. One issue with setting up a closed system for cooling is how you manage to cool and muffle the exhaust. If you are planning to set up a second water pump for that you could drive it with a belt from the flywheel (fastening a suitably sized V pully to the flywheel). I have contemplated setting up a closed system on mine just as a flushing system as my biggest concerns when the pump starts to leak it drips salt water onto the crankshaft. I tighten up on the gland when regularly but often I am running the motor for several hours straight.

Thanks Laurie
Not really worth the effort.
The boat will run most of the time in fresh water, so just flush after running in salt water?

I flush with fresh water then fill the water jacket with cheap radiator coolant between between outings (on advice from Todd Vidgen). Bruce

Can anyone suggest how to stop small bits of weed getting into my water intake on my Blaxland twin. Is there a guard or mesh attachments for the intake???Quinton

Hi - Have used these before - alternative is a similar outside screen over the existing inlet.

Hi Andrew, Many thanks for that inoformation . I will speak to them and get organised . I am in Ballarat and the lake wendouree is now full and they are cutting the weed but bits get into the inlet so this might work or I can also put a wire mesh on the inside ???Do you have a blaxland ??

i have always found a garden hose filter is effective for weed and lots cheaper than a marine equivalent
you might also want to look here

No do not have a Blaxland, but I used a larger equivalent on a Chrysler straight 8 inboard. The idea is to stop the muck before it gets into the inlet and wrecks your Jabsco - not so critical on a Blaxland, but loss of cooling wrecks your motor and scales up the jackets. Whitworths also sell similar outboard screens in plastic. I work on large vessels - our issues are not weed, but jelly fish and plastic bags.

Dont forget that there is supposed to be a 1inch
round mesh strainer in the joint between the pump
body and the bronze elbow.
Also if you fit a good quality rose to the hull
you will also further reduce weed intake.
