have just taken my simplex 6-7hp single out of my 20 foot putt putt. I have work to do on the hull and am wondering what if anything I should do to the motor while its not being used. Currently the motor is stored in a nice dry spot in the shed at work covered with stretch plastic (aussies call it glad wrap.) Flushed it with fresh water before removal also.

Paul,
I suggest:
a. Filling the water chamber with engine coolant/rust inhibitor and sealing in to prevent evaporation. You may need to fit some hoses etc so the water doesn't just run out the inlet. This is preferable to letting it dry out bcause even after fresh waster flushing rust could be a problem and there's nothing sadder than a cracked block.

b. Change the engine oil and turn the motor over a few revolutions to cover bearings , gearbox etc with the fresh oil.

c. Removing spark plugs and spray the pots with something like WD40 (diesel is also good. Then refit the plugs.

d. Drain the carby and plug the air intake with a bit of clean rag.

e. If you are going to repaint the engine do so and either way spray the outside of the engine with a clear marine 'sealer' (some of the outboard makers have proprietory sprays).

I wouldn't cover it in the plastic film as it may 'sweat' inside. Instead I'd just cover it with a dust sheet or plastic tarp.

Of course the magneto should be kept in a warm dry,safe place.

thanks for that laurie. It may be stored for some months so your advice is appreciated. I am removing the fibreglass skin from the keel to the waterline to repair and reglass the hull. Will post photos when complete. This will no doubt be in 2012 as the usual time and money aspect comes into play. Also doing up a prindle 16 catamaran at the same time. Looking to teach the kids to sail. Hoping they show more interest than motorboating/fishing.

Agreed - there are many lovely old motors with rust wedged blocks. You can fill them with coolant or kero or even oil. Put a return hose between outlet and inlet and circulate. No air inside jacket. Also turn the engine regularly to a new spot - say once a month - do this once a week and it will cover forgetfulness.

Paul, You project sounds a lot like one I did a few years ago on an 18 footer. On mine, I just removed the fibreglass to the waterline and recaulked the boat (with some sister ribs to boot). That was OK becasue the boat stayed in the water. Cheers Laurie
