Hello Everyone,

The questions have probably been asked many times before:

1) I just bought a putter with a Blaxland twin which was fully reconditioned by Boyd Meyer. It needs running in. Would there be oil in the sump, or should I put some in. (this looks like a fun thing to do as you pour the oil in through the carb?) Does this oil ever need to be changed?

2) I have been told that when starting the engine on the trailer, I should only turn the hose to supply water for the water pump on once the engine has started. Never just turn the hose on and let water force through without the pump, as you rub the risk of filling the sump. Is this correct?

Thank for your help.

David,

Yes, oil does sit in the sump, as a splash lube for the big ends, the big end cap has holes in it to allow oil pickup to lube the big end/ crank bearing. I would think there be oil in sump already if BM reconditioned it, try loosening the sump plug and see if it leaks. I'm using Castrol ST90 Gear Oil as recommended by the old boys and is available online here in Oz, 1.Ltr bottle (see link below), I need to research the quantity myself again as I've forgotten.
Re: Hose water, don't think I would apply water pressure to the inlet, just a bucket full of water for the intake hose to suck from, (plenty you tube vids showing this) prolly help to fill/prime intake hose 1st, there shouldn't be any probs of water getting to sump, they are not connected unless you have an internal corroded/cracked Barrel.

...thought about water getting to the sump a bit more, It could if you ran hose pressure thru the motor and it was to reach the muffler, it could fill up and flow thru the exhaust port into the cylinder and sump.

Thanks Shaun.

I am located in Sydney. Where are you based? I am trying to get my motor started, but its so tight, I can hardly turn the flywheel fast enough. Ideally, I would like to spend some time with someone who owns one to find out more about the motors.

My mobile phone Number is: 0431126165. Would love to have a chat with you.

Thanks,

DH
