Hi,

I'm an avid diver in Southern California and I'm trying to identify a wreck. We think we know what it is, but it would help to have a positive ID on the engine type. Can anybody help identify this engine? I can post more pictures from different angles if needed.

Could be a Union - initially I thought a Palmer, but valve gear not quite the same as Palmer's

I don't want to prejudice the jury (i.e., the experts in this forum).

We believe that this was a fishing boat built in the early 1900s in the San Pedro, CA area.

Our belief is that it is either a Atlas-Imperial or a Standard engine. It seems like there was an East Coast "Standard" engine company and a West Coast "Standard" engine company (that built a "Frisco Standard" engine).

Before I chance a guess I will require some idea of scale, is the flywheel 1 foot or three feet across.

In the picture of the flywheel, there is a fish. Those fish are usually 6-9" long so I would guess the diameter of the flywheel to be 12-18".

I'm hoping to get another dive on the wreck in the next few weeks to make an actual measurement.

I have a ton of other pictures if you need more.

Thanks!

Quick update: I took a quick measurement of the flywheel. It is about 42 inches in diameter. I was alone and so making an accurate measurement isnt' easy (nobody to hold the other side).

A 42 inch flywheel and 3 pushrods per cylinder, and what looks to be 4 cylinders, I'll bet Atlas Imperial Diesel about 60 to 80 horsepower. Should tip the scales around 10-12 thousand pounds if all there with reverse gear.
