I have been looking for a Bosch DU2 Model 5 or Model 6 magneto for a Caille I have. There are lots of DU4 Magnetos out there but the DU2 hasn't been turning up very often. The few DU2s that have turned up often either have the aluminum base instead of the brass base and corrosion has taken its toll on them or they are basket cases. What are the problems and modifications, if any, of using a DU4 instead?

Just short the 2 unused terminals to ground and other than causing you to get questions and look a little weird it will work fine.
Hope this helps

I may give that a shot if a DU 2 doesn't turn up before long. Thanks Ernie.

Since a DU2 and DU4 look about the same if you get creative on how you short the 2 exrtra terminals most people will never notice it is the wrong mag.
What model Caille?

Ernie,
I posted a photo of the engine as "Another Caille Twin" under the topic 'Caille' on April 22. Thanks for responding.

I am not married to a Bosch DU but it looks like a reasonable bet that the DU was original equipment to the engine. JB posted literature indicating the Perfection used one of three different mags - Bosch, Berling, or Dixie. Ads posted by John Davis depicted a Bosch magneto that looks like one of the DU series. So, I settled on the Bosch, rightly or wrongly, for four reasons: The required bolt spacing is 2x2 as it is on the Bosch DU 2/4; the distance between the base of a Bosch DU magneto and the center of the magneto drive shaft swinging a 1:1 gear on it works with the DU2/4; the timing shaft apparently never had a timer sitting on top of it so the timing had to be on the magneto which also is a characteristic of a DU2/4; the ads John posted depict a Bosch that appears to be a DU2. I am open to suggestions as to other models of magnetos that may work.

I am still looking for a 24 tooth bevel gear to go on the magneto. If I have to have one made, is Boston Gear the place to go?

Boston Gear would be a good start especially if it is a blank and you bore it as needed to fit the mag
It also might be you have to replace both gears if they don't have the exact one. Who will know if it is a tooth or so either way as long as they are both the same
