Lockwood-Ash were big in South Louisiana in logging, hunting and fishing in the first half of the 20th century .I'm trying to set up a engine trailer with Lockwood-Ash engines, manuals, and sales catalogs or anything L-A. Let me know if you have for sale any L-A inboard from 1905 to 1925 from 1-1/2 to 25 H.P. It will go to a good home and seen by a lot of people. Thanks Keith

Looking forward to seeing display as it comes together !

This 1925 LA ad claims "Builders of Marine Engines
for 22 years"
Never sure how accurate ads are but it would put established year back to 1903 ?

We are off to a good start. We have a few engines and we collect L-A ads also. As you, we use the ads and manuals to date the engines. Thanks for the ads. Keith

My friend, Bill, has a small, incomplete Lockwood-Ash 1-cylinder. Specifically, missing timing mechanism. Can anyone help?

That motor won't run with that carburetor. It needs a Lunkenheimer mixer or a check valve with the carb.

I have a model 41 LA, found it today while rooting around in my barn where I stashed it a few years ago. Can anyone post a good picture of the intake manifold so I can print it? Mine has a home made job that places the carb pretty high and has an elbow in it. I need to see the real thing.

I got it several years ago on a trade. It runs. The Bosch mag has been replaced with a Wico, and one head bolt has been replaced with a modern cap screw. And of course, the manifold.

If I can make it look right it is to go into a model T Ford collection at the Western Antique Aeroplane and Automobile Museum here in Oregon because it was marketed as using Ford parts--available anywhere as the add says.

Help is always deeply appreciated and I thank you in advance.

Jack

the 1923 model 41 had a bosch mag if the ser. # was below 1200, if over it used a wico. I'm not good with photo but will try later with parts list. keith

Keith, That's an interesting thing about the number break for the magneto, but mine is model 41, HP 5, No. 594. I'll probably put it on display as is. The Wico fits and works and would be an acceptable upgrade for an engine in service.

The requirement for displays at WAAAM is that they have to work or be in process of rebuild to working condition. Check out WAAAM on Facebook or Google it. I am primarily their volunteer steam engine mechanic.

Thanks,

Jack

Hi PrimeTrucks.
Bill talks like he has a design well in mind.
But doesn't seem to be top priority now.
Building a couple pieces of furniture for his wife,
and soon will be putting in his garden I assume.
When I see him this week, I'll try to remember to
take my camera with me.

Thanks Richard, I think your engine is a 1911. L-A made 2 1/2 hp, type A in 1911 and 1912. 1910 was a 2 HP Type A and 1913 was 2 1/2 HP Model 2 1/2.

I am still interested in collecting serial numbers from Lockwood Ash, Motorgo, and Nadler marine engines. I still need manuals. I will buy the ones you have or a copy or a copy of a copy. There was a big change in engines from 1910 to 1912. They had, in that time period, 1 -2 - 3 and 4 cylinder engines. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Keith is putting a lot of time in his L-A research, if you have an engine he can help date it by features.

thanks for the photo max.I do better with photos of the inlet side so I can see the water pump w/strap, block flanges, timer and timer pad, gear cover primer cup, inlet check and so on. both of your engines are from 1917 to 1920. thats when they had model 24, schebler, screw exhaust, the inlet valve stem comes out of the ell and t-timers. Thanks, Keith

Max, I think the 4 hp is a 1917. The thing i don't know is the flywheel size, 14" or 13 1/2" and can you see the valve stem on the intake ell. I think the 2 1/2" is 1916, again the flywheel, 11 1/2" or 12 1/4" and is the valve coming through. Thanks for showing your engines,Keith

Thanks Keith for the info so far. I am going to bother you once more. I am not familiar with the term intake ell but I assume that it is the air intake into the carburetor, if so, the tips of the adjusting screws can be clearly seen protruding through the spring loaded valve. As for the diameter of the flywheels, the 4 H.P. has a diameter of 13 1/2 inches and the 2 1/2 H.P. has a diameter of what appears to me to be closer to 11 3/4 than 11 1/2 inches. Thanks again.photo

Max, on the engine behind the carburetor is a large nut, that is the intake. Under that nut is a valve with the stem down, on some models it goes through the ell so you can move it with your finger. Some times they get stuck. Some valves are up and some are down and some are blind and don't go through the metal. It helps to date them. Later, Keith

Thanks again, I feel that I have become quite a bother but you do keep replying and requesting more info. On my engines the valve assemblies are identical except for size. The valve stems do protrude through the housing and can be manipulated externally with a finger. Once again I am going to try to attach photo. Thank you in advance Max
