Chris...not much info .Questions come up now and then about Brit. All I can tell you is that your engine would be the E10 of 8BHP at 1100 rpm .Single cylinder bore 3.5 ,stroke4.5 weight490 Lbs and the price in 1960 was 178 pounds stirling.
The postal address was Brit Engineering Co Ltd , Bridport ,Dorset UK.
Sorry that is all I have .

Hello all,

I have a 10 hp Brit Sprite dating from about 1974, powering a 20 foot boat. Since it was designed to run on leaded petrol I was advised to add Redex to each can of fuel that I use. I now find that each time I start the engine the exhaust puts out a sooty mess that floats across the harbour. The engine also tends to 'run on' when I throttle back. Is it possible that both these problems are related to the Redex, and if so (or if not!) can anyone suggest a solution?

Thanks for any advice.

Hi paul, i have worked on brit engines and have also read the manual from cover to cover and there is no mention of REDEX being used, i would leave the redex out and use lead free only. i have never had any problems using straight lead free. regards steve.

Hi Steve, thanks for your comment. I have the manual, but I suppose it was written when they were still putting lead in petrol so this was not an issue. The previous owner of the boat advised me to use Redex, and I believe he had been using it. I will try doing without and hope the problem goes away.
Thanks, Paul

Hi,

The Brit was an excellent little engine, quiet and smooth, and an easy starter. I used to buy parts in the 70s from two old boys in a shed in West Bay, Bridport, but long gone now. Ideal engine for a small launch, and far better than a noisy diesel.

Biggest problem was due to the raw water cooling, the aluminium timing case formed the blanking plate for the forward end of the water jacket. Aft end was a 1/4" steel plate, identical size. As would be expected with an aluminium case made out of redundant milk bottle tops, the salt water had corroded through the aluminium and filled the timing case with salt water. One I got the case emptied out and cleaned the sprockets up, I took the inner case to a machine shop and had 0.275" machined off the back, epoxy glued and csk screwed a cover plate over the hole making sure it sealed, then tapped the block to take a rear cover plate, secured by csk s/s machine screws worked perfectly!

You won't find parts now but almost certainly will find other parts fit, from memory the bearings are the same as a Ford 100E sidevalve car. you'll just have to do what we do in the vintage car/racing car world, get someone in the UK to make the parts you need, it's not as outrageously expensive as you might think, gaskets can be made by William Johnson & co in Birmingham, to pattern, pistons will almost certainly be the same as something else, It can all be done with patience and a little trawling of the internet, just forget ordering parts from your local dealer!

If you have a magneto, get it rewound by a reputable vintage car or motorcycle man, it'll cost you around 250 but with new windings and epoxy insulation it will start immediately and keep going forever.
