I have larger pictures but this is all I'm allowed. To give you an idea of its size, the flywheel is only 11 inches in diameter. Who built it?
Thanks,
Denis Rouleau

It was suggested to me that my engine could be a Pierce made in Racine Wisconsin. I made a search here for Pierce and all Pierce engines have a removable head and the name cast in the flywheel.

There is one that differs and I'm including 2 pictures of it. It is a headless engine and the flywheel looks similar to my flywheel less the name on the flywheel. More info and/or comments would be most welcomed.

Have 68 engine makers in data base with 4 hole flywheels ? I'll go through them !

Not saying the engine is a Pierce, crankcase casting is question ? here's a 1909 Piere ad

Pierce is the only engine I've seen with that timer, reminds me of a Stevensons' link on a steam engine. Later Pierce engines were headless. The rear Exhaust and water pump look like the Detroit Auto Marine style engines.

Dennis, I believe this is the later style Pierce, but I don't have dates. I have an inverted twin from the 1890's, a single with a bolt on head I believe to be from the early 1900's, the twin below is from the same era as your engine, same flywheel style, same cylinder shape, and the distinctive Pierce timer.

In the thread linked below is some info. Another feature I've seen on Pierce engines is the brass bushing adapter for the carburetor, the one in this thread looks like yours.

JB These photos of Bobs engine Show a split case crankcase, I have 60 makers with them went through all and no matches, also went through 64 makers with 4 hole flywhels no hits ? I've searched everything I have on Pierce, early ones have removable heads, headless engs came on the scene about 1905-06 but all pierces have a one piece crankcase and name cast into flywheel ? Timer, cylinder shape and 4 hole flywheel sure look like Pierce, accept the support bracket on timer control looks different than pierce ! most of my research material is in storage temporarily, and most of my memory is there too ! will keep looking ????

Richard, I wonder if there was any connection between Pierce and Detroit Auto Marine or some of the similar engines. The rear exhaust and water pump are like a Detroit.

JB< I think Jim Fehl restored one of these Pierce Racine engines ?? Mine is missing the casting that feeds the mixer/carb after air passes through the preheat passage. No name cast in the flywheel but it sports a brass tag ID tag naming it a Pierce

The blue one is mine the timer is the same but the base casting is more like Bob engine it is a good running engine. And you will need to put a kill switch in the timer hole I made mine up maybe Bob is more original it makes easy to reverse

The sheer numbers of makers makes me wonder, how many total small marine engine makers of all types are in your database Rich?

I remember Richard saying he had over 1700 documented manufacturers, This meant either a picture of a tag or some written data such as ads. Some of these may have been limited production if at all. I'm sure it included some re badged engines. I know he added more names after. When gasoline engines were invented the water was as ready as it is now, automobiles had to wait for roads. In South Louisiana if you didn't have a boat chances are you couldn't visit your neighbor, ride through today and see how many bridges you cross on the highways, a horse and buggy wouldn't have gotten you far.

Was away a few days

old marine engine data base names of north american makers from 1890's to 1940 currently has 2088 entries !
posting one maker a week on here it would give us a theme and interest to research with all the modern tools and access and something to talk about etc for the next 40 years ??
